Maternal Mental Health

How many times have you asked, "When will I start feeling like my old self?". The 4th trimester is a unique time that is rarely spoken about. Postpartum Depression and Anxiety are real things, but unfortunately, many mothers carry shame with the emotions attached to their new season. If you find yourself struggling with feelings of sadness, loss of motivation, anxiousness filled with intrusive thoughts, or questioning your motherly abilities- we want to help you.

We work with mothers in all stages of the motherhood journey which also includes those in the family planning stage or currently pregnant. As a reminder, motherhood is a JOURNEY.

We are proud to share that we partner with several Ob-Gyns in the Atlanta area and have been a trusted referral source for their patients. For women who have struggled with depression and/or anxiety, we know the likelihood of postpartum depression/anxiety is higher therefore it is highly recommended you seek out counseling as soon as you begin to consider expanding your family.

At the Walk of Life Counseling Center, we prioritize maternal mental health and offer specialized services to address concerns or challenges during this important time in you and your family's journey. Our highly collaborative, solution-focused, and empathic approach to maternal mental health is the reason our practice is a trusted referral source for several Atlanta OBGYN clinics.

Think of
maternal mental health as an umbrella term for a wide range of topics and services for women in the perinatal, postpartum, and parenting phases of motherhood including:

  • Management of pre-existing mental health disorders during pregnancy
  • Management of perinatal or postpartum mood, anxiety, or psychotic disorders
  • Loss and grief stemming from miscarriage, stillbirth, and infant death
  • Child birthing trauma
  • Fourth trimester support for rest and recovery
  • New parents and shifting family dynamics
  • Parenting challenges and lifespan development education

Maternal mental health counseling services may be beneficial for you if you've been treated for depression, anxiety, or post-traumatic stress, as there is a higher likelihood of those disorders and their symptoms resurfacing or becoming exacerbated during your pregnancy or postpartum. Other women may find maternal mental health counseling helpful in navigating their new role and finding effective ways to communicate their needs to their partner. If you find yourself struggling to cope with the shift in your sleep schedule, energy, mood, relationships, or ability to think like yourself - contact us today for a consultation.
